Tying materials question

Happy Holidays all. Got a bunch of new tying materials for X-mas, when my girl asked me a question that I didn't know how to answer.. are the animals whose feathers, fur, and hair we use ever harmed in the process? Never thought about this one. I know some people who hunt and use these things for tying, but this question is really about the distributing companies and fly stores that sell the products. Anyone have an answer to this one?
