I found an article by Hans Wielenmann on flyfisherman.com(see below) about tying with CDC. The article explains a classification method for different types of cdc feathers.
He says type 2 is best for wing posts. It seems that you'd need to use a few of these to get a full wing. Wouldn't it be easier to use the type 3 oiler puff to make wings since the barbs seem to be thicker?
Also, what techniques do you find best to make a thick wing(like on cdc BWO emergers). I have seen a tier on this site strip the barbs off the stem, wet his fingers slightly, roll the cdc barbs, then tie them in. This seems like a good way to get a lot of barbs compacted together and easy to tie in. Then when it dries, it gets nice and "puffy". Just wondering if anyone does it any differently.
