| Newbie, asking for directions. Hey all, this is my first post ever. I've inherited my father's fly tying tools, materials, rod and everything else. I've never flyfished before, but after my father's death a few months ago I decided to start doing it. I brought everything from Argentina (I'm living in New York City). Many of the things that I've even bought for him in Orvis everytime I went down there. My first book was from a garage sale. Trout bum. Amazing. From now on, I've got several other books from Gierach, Hughes and others. My first time ever, I caught a tiny brown trout with my father's rod and reel in Swift River, MA!!! I'm going there on a regular basis since my girlfriend is from Amherst. Almost every time I managed to get one or two trouts. All of them with hoppers. The feeling of casting to a particular trout and seeing getting your fly is amazing. However, everybody there is nymph fishing. So last week I've decided to do the same. With no success!!! All day long and not a single trout. All the trouts refused the flies at the last moment. It was my first time in waders (my loving girlfriend bought them as my christmas' present). On the 26th, I was the only one fishing there. So I thought, wow, I'm really a hard-core fisherman. In the afternoon another fisherman was nymph fishing and in almost every cast, he got a nice trout. I was watching him with no luck myself, except a tiny brown caught with a huge nymph (I don't have too many patterns). So after the guy was done he approached me out of pity, I guess. He gave me a 6X tippet spool, a couple of the flies he was using, split shots and the advice of going where he was fishing. What a great guy. In 5 minutes he taught me more, than all the books I've read,After my very first cast with the new equipment and knowledge, I caught one that had refused my flies all day long!!! So after this intro, I would like to start tying flies like my father. Where do you guys buy your materials? www.jsflyfishing.com www.hookhack.com orvis, etc? I have some feathers and skins, the problem is that I'm not sure what they are, since most of them are not labeled. I don't have hooks though, so should I get the standard Mustad hooks (100) or the more expensive ones 25 (Mustard and others)? Thanks, Mati I Last edited by Mati : 01-03-2007 at 12:47 AM. |
