    blue fishing

I havent seen may guys out there fishing for blues, they are all over, for those who want to try saltwater, good to start on blue fish, union beach is a good place to start nice flat lots of fish i spent 3 hours las wendnesday and was taking fish on every 3 cast, got tired, arms hurting I was with my 9weight outfit, I think I could manage with something lighter I would give my arms a rest and still land the fish.

My dad lives in Union Beach and fishes those beds all the time and says the same thing. Never felt the need to fish there though, since I've got the Manasquan River, Inlet, and the bay right here. Blues have been active for over a month now. I agree, great fish to start saltwater with.

Sounds like a lot of fun. Except that I know nothing about salt water fishing or blues. Share some info, ie bait, outfits, etc. Thanks.

I usually use my G Loomis 8/9 wt for blues and most stripers. If they're surfacing, a flooting line will do, but other times you need a full sink or sink tip. My sink tip line works well when attached at the end of my shooting line. If you want to spend the $ on a better setup, they make all kinds of line specifically for blues or stripers, but I've always done fine w/out them. As for flies, you'll want to check out a local salt water fly shop or retailing catalog. We've got "down n' trout" here in Pt Pleasant. Deceivers are a must in my box, as are Mushmouths, Clousers, etc. You want to immitate the bunker/baitfish. Think shiners and minnows because blues are known for eating the smaller schools of fish, not quite as big as the flies used for stripers, even though some people will use the same sized flies for both. If you're off shore a bit or even surf fishing, look for flocks of gulls because they often follow the Blues and their feeding frenzies. Enjoy.

I was with my 9weight Iand I felt a little heavy, the fish was 20" to 24" long then I decided to get my 7pieces march brown steel head rod(8 weight) and on my first fish with the rod i got in to a 32" mad blue ... whatta a drvie that fish put me to , know my 8 weight full sink is my first bet, it can handle you know. but a stronger rod is on the trunk waiting for the stripers... or better giv the 8 weight a try on it...

    Re: blue fishing

Had a buddy in his kayak in Raritan Bay today and he tells me it was the season's best bluefishing so far - big and lots of them eating his fly. I haven't made it out on the beach or 'yak yet this year, I'm way overdue to grab my 9 weight!

    Re: blue fishing

Are they on the beach all day every day ? I was about to sell my salt stuff because I have tried it 3 years in a row and never even had a hit. The other people on the beach always say you should have been here yesterday, this morning, last week, ect. The fish seem to come in for a short time and leave for a long time. I am of the opinion if you dont live there and can't just drop what you are doing and run to the beach when you hear their is action its a long shot.

True surf fishing is a long shot,I was down in Lavalette last week for 10 days and did not see a fish, but while surf fishing I always have the feeling that the next double hall will bring the 30 lb. striper or 16lb. blue. Ya never know. When you do finally hit it right you forget all about the times you didn,t catch anything. it keeps me coming back for more. hang in there the rewards are great.

Its hard to come for a day and surf fish without knowing if they've been hitting. I guess I dont have to say it, but the ocean is vast. I usually fish a little inside the inlets and bay. I feel there's a better chance of hooking up there then on the surf, but I enjoy the beach sometimes too (all the time for stripers). Of course the bigger blues are probably in the surf, but it takes patience some days.
