I am new to fly fishing (salt and freshwater) and want to fish the calm and shallow back bays/clear water with a guide on a skiff in New Jersey (Barneget/Raritan bays) with my son who is only 10 years old. Since he is on the small side, my instructor felt that an 8 weight outfit would be too hefty to cast all day.

What do you guys think of having him use a 7 weight on a calm day if there is such a thing on the Jersey shore in protected waters. Would it be fun and useful for him. Both of us are still learning how to cast.
