A few weeks ago I had a chance to use my 3wt TFO LK Pro rod on successive Sundays (first time this season that I got to fish that many times in such a short time). By the end of the 2nd session I was convinced that my rod wasn't loading my line well enough (it was only the 3rd time overall that I've had a chance to use this rod). It just didn't feel as good as my 5wt Sage FLi does. I thought it was the rod. I was almost considering selling it and getting something else when it was suggested to me that I try to go up a line weight on my fly line which might help the rod load better.
So today I had some spare time to cast in my backyard. I tried both my existing line (Wulff TT3F) and a new SA WF4F Trout series line. The 4wt line was SO MUCH harder to load compared to the 3wt line. After about 10 min with the 4wt WF line, I switched reels to the 3wt TT line and the difference was amazing. So much less effort required and my rod was loading just fine.
I think what my problem was (on those days that I fished) was that I was casting in tight conditions (which I'm horrible at) which required different arm angles (which I also am not good at).
What I want to figure out is what made the difference in the casting charateristics of those two fly lines on the same rod? The taper or the line weight? |
