I figured this was close enough to Jersey that some of you might be interested in the conditions.
Fished on Saturday from Noon till dark. Air was about 70, not sure what the water was. During midday size 22 pheasent tails were producing well. Around 7:00 scattered tan #16 caddis and a prolific midge hatch started. The fish were taking midge and caddis puppae under the surface, but not much on top. Then around 7:45 the fish started moving to the surface. Went through almost every midge in my box before I figured them out. They weren't eating the dominant midge hatch, but the lesser cranefly hatch. With the 2 cranefly patterns I had managed 1 fish and snapped two others off. Anyway, it was amazing watching some of the larger 15-17 inch fish leap almost 2 body lengths out of the water to grap the craneflies.
All in all I landed one 18 inch bow, but he didn't give much fight (out of curiosity, do they stock this section? This fish had great coloration and all his fins were clean, but he sure fought like a stick). Had another 16 inch bow on briefly that took off like a bat out of hell and threw my fly on the second jump. Mixed in were a few smaller browns and a lot of missed strikes/broken tippetts. |
