Newbie question about rod choice

howdy,

i am looking to get my first fly-fishing setup. what would be the best length and weight (line) rod for both a newbie to learn on and fishing the streams of NJ?

if it makes any difference, i prefer UL in spinning gear - even when going for 1-5 lb bass (it just seems more fun).
