Over the years, particularly on the Delaware system, I have found spinner patterns to be less satisfactory imitations as some of the other effective dun and emerger patters that I have in my arsenal. They just don't seem to work as well. I've tried many different kinds. The best tie I have found so far is the compraemerger with hackle V-Cut from the bottom and from the top (top may not be necessary) for the winging and to supply the float.
I spent the last week on fishing largely the West Branch of the Delaware and did find a version of the comparaemerger, quill body, that did seen to fool some really nice fish. and work much better than other ties I have used (e.g. dubbing). There were many spinner falls of hendricksons so I fished it in a size 14 and 16. I also find that it is important to fish with as little hackle as possible. Many commercial ties are too thick on the hackle.
Does anyone else have experience with quill bodies particularly with spinners? Do you think they work better than dubbed flys? Are there any other tips anyone is willing to share of good spinner fly patterns and design?
Anyone else care to share a favorite spinner pattern or provide other obervations regarding spinners. Again, particularly in the smaller sizes I find our spinner patterns are not as good as some of the dun and emerger patterns we have. |
