    New guy here, saying hi.

I wanted to say hi to the forum, I found this site googling info on nj fly fishing. I have been into bass fishing both fresh and saltwater since a little kid thanks to my dad. About 2 years ago he got a 9 weight st croix fly rod with a scientific anglers reel and was wanting to get into fly fishing in the salt. He started tying his own flys over the winter and I could tell he really enjoyed it. Sadly, last june he passed away too young at 56 and never got to get out there and learn to fly fish and use all the flys he had tied up.
Enough of the sad thou, I would like to get into fly fishing as I have enjoyed all other types of fishing and really enjoy watching the art of fly fishing. I am fortunate enough that my girl also loves to fish but does not get mad if I go alone. Like dad would say, Its like a sore dick you can't beat it.
I am looking into getting a guide to take me and the lady out that will supply the gear and I am also looking into getting a 5 or 6 weight rod for myself since I have the salt water setup already. I am down in Cherry Hill about 10 min from philly but I am willing to drive for a good guide. Any tips or advice on your favorite knowledgable guide and also a good beginners setup would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading time to go explore the forum some more.

Welcome, fly fishing is a great way to express yourself and forget about all the shit life throws your way..

I lost my bestfriend a few years back and once i started FF it really helped fill the void.. I hope it does the same for you.

Having a GF who likes to fish is a BIG plus, if you dont get lucky on the stream. You can uhhh get lucky on the stream..

As for rods, go with a 8'6" 5wt. Id get something with a guarantee so you dont have to worry about breaking it. Many companys offer rods a unconditional guarantee.

Also, pick up a few good books for some guidance. Anything by Tom rosenbauer, dave huges and ed engle are great reads and contain great info.

    GOOD LUCK!

Thank you I will look into those books to read at night. It took me a few months after he passed to start up fishing again but since I started again I go whenever I can even when Im not catching fish it gives me a peaceful feeling. I want to pick up where he was going with fly fishing. I enjoyed all the times he would tie up flys and show me how they would look in the water using the kitchen sink

Some fly shops like Shannon's in Califon offer great deals on fly rod and reel combos and all the basic gear you'd need and they toss in a free guide trip to get you started on the right path. Or you can go it alone and buy your gear as you see fit and hire a guide when the weather cools a bit. Welcome to the site.

Thanks for the they're asking for everything needed to get started and a class included thats not a bad price. Im gonna have to try to at least make a trip up there this weekend. I know the weather is warm no but I was thinking of just getting a setup and practice catching little bass, panfish and blue gill.

Sounds like you have a real sentimental connection to fly fishing. Fly fishing can take you to some reall cool and unique places. When you get a chance, check out the catskills if you havent already.

Another book that i really enjoyed and reccomend is 'trout fishing in the catskills' by Ed Van Put. Lots of great history of fly fishing.

After you catch ONE fish with one of the flies your dad tied, get a nice pic of you the fly and the fish and save the rest. The older you get the more you will appreciate them.

Hell no and it aint over now.......

Yea fly is something I would like to get into like he was. He was definitely a surf and sea fisherman too. I have a lot of very nice custom surf rods and old penn reels that still run like a champ. When Im heading out to my fishing spots around here I'll have keep an eye out for a fun place to start trying out the fly when I get a setup.
