Got out and fished the fabled Battenkill just on the NYS side of the border from 5 to 7 pm. Nothing happening at first but then the flying ants hit the water. Reminded me of the Delaware. Same honey color and size. The fish came up. Got one missed a couple and then the T-storm hit. Just good to get out even if the action was short lived.
If you've never fished this stream try it one day. Once it was one of the best in the east for browns and brooks. It has experienced a huge decline in trout numbers with no understood cause but I have heard that it was on the upswing again. The area is drop dead gorgeous. Lots of river craft in the summer so it must be fished either at first light or a at twilight.
Any one else experience this stream lately? Are the fish counts increaseing? It seemed that way to me but you know how those ants can bring up all the fish.
