Caught a Permit in Mexico (plus more) I went to Mexico on vacation about 4 weeks ago and stayed at a beautiful resort about 1.5 hours south of Cancun. Before going I stopped into Streams of Dreams, plopped some $$ on the counter and asked Harry to give me some flies for the bones. I took an 8wt Sage RPLXi and a 7/8 Reddington reel and just a small bag of flies and gear. I figured I could only sit on the beach for so long each day and once the wife and family got settled, I could cast a little each day.
What a trip. Just a short walk from the swimming area was a beautiful deserted cove, somewhat protected from the afternoon wind. I caught bonefish almost every day 3-5 pounds. I had a couple of Barracuda clip everything off a couple of times and then to top it all off I got a permit.
The best part was I saw him out there on the reef. I made a single 50 foot cast with a small shrimp pattern. When the fly landed about 8 feet short of him, he turned to check things out. He pursued the fly slowly as I stripped. I was afraid he would spook and something posessed me to just strip as fast as I could. He covered the distance instantly and took and an incredible fight was on. It lasted maybe 20-25 minutes with me running up and down the beach. A guy from PA snapped a couple of shots because I did not have a camera. And this good samaritan just sent me the shots. I still need to get them to digital and will post them here. the fish is gorgeous.
I know some guys have waited a long time for a permit and the best part of my story is that I have made a single cast to the only permit I have ever seen and I caught him. He ran me into my backing many times (not even sure actually).
To add to this, I caught my first bones ever that week and even better my son (11) and I landed 2 sailfish, 2 white marlin and 3 mahi, mahi on a 4 hour charter. The permit and these game fish were all caught across a 48 hour span. My only concern is I may have used up a lifetime of fisherman's luck. Great memories though. Pics to be posted soon.
