Wild Thompson Steelhead Petition
To: BC Minister of Environment
Currently, the Bristish Columbia Ministry of Environment (MOE) does not support hatchery augmentation of Thompson River steelhead, a position supported by the Steelhead Stream Classification Policy (SSCP at http://bit.ly/deIhkI).
The SSCP states that streams designated as “wild” will be managed to maintain and protect the abundance, distribution and genetic diversity of indigenous steelhead stocks.
MOE classifies the Thompson as a “wild” steelhead stream. Thompson steelhead are one of the few stocks of the “redband subspecies” of rainbow trout still regarded as wild as they have not been exposed to any significant period of hatchery augmentation.
Some BC angler conservation and community groups are advocating for a hatchery “solution” to the Thompson’s problems.
We support wild Thompson River steelhead and are opposed to any hatchery augmentation.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
