Line weight Question

Was talking with a few guys about line weights, one guy says he likes to use a line one or two sizes larger than his rod weight(5# rod 7# line) he says he gets more distance with that set up... I have heard of this before but, have never tryed it. I keep it balanced (5# rod 5# line)... My question is, does anyone use this oversize line set up? If so what are the advantages or draw backs?.... Thanks
