I know of a couple of long casters that underline a rod by a weight. That is because they tend to aerialize so much line that they would be over power a rod.
My experience is that overlining a rod may be okay for a beginner learning to make short casts, but in the long run it is far better to learn how to cast properly from the start.

Jim,
Thanks for your tip. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't tried it for myself.
My favorite rod is an Orvis mid-flex 5wt. With 5wt line it works great on small streams where my casts never exceed 50', but on bigger rivers like the Beaverkill it gets real sluggish when trying to make those long casts (50-80'). last night, I tried what you recommended and put 4wt line on my reel. Man what a difference. My rod loaded much easier and I was able to make those 60-80' casts without any real effort.
