Not Ranked : 0 East Branch Croton 5/3/09 Evening Went out to the East Branch Croton last night for a couple of hours. Got there around 5. Flow was at 50CFS and I have had ZERO luck there so far so I wasn't expecting much.
I spoke with a couple guys coming off the river and they said they saw a coouple of fishing rising, so I tied on a caddis and hit a pool that I have heard is very productive. First cast I see a fish come up and take the fly. I set the hook, and I think I have the SMALLEST trout known to man. I bring it to hand and its a bluegill. Caught 5 more of them before I left.
However, I finally gave into temptation and perched myself in the "bathtub pool" as it is called. I never fished this because if there was a crowd there were always people in or by it, and I was slightly embarassed to be the guy in the coveted hole flailing around. But it was late and rainy so noone was around.
Tied on another caddis. I learned that after a few fish the fly doesnt float well. Around 6:30 the river started boiling. fishing rising everywhere. brought 7 fish to hand in about 45 minutes, for me thats a record.
One weird thing is that after a couple fish I was just letting the caddis sit while i got my fly box out and it sunk down about 1-1.5 feet. And I see a couple trout make passes at it. So I started to high stick it no more than 2 feet from me and had a couple strikes. Weird.
And one confession. My dad loves fishing and he loves trout. I took 2 stockies and brought them over his house as a gift. It was within regulation, and it was for good cause.
