Quick Tie Knot

In Holbrook & Koch's book Midge Magic they demonstrate this knot.

They state the knot won't slip or part.

It looks easy and a quick tie.



Who has tried this knot and does it hold as they claim?

It is almost like an Orvis Figure 8 knot, except that the
loop is formed downside toward the eye of the hook,
where the Orvis is formed away from the eye, the tag end
exits in opposit directions.

That looks like Karel's Davy Knot to me, viewed slightly differently. Everyone else seems to like it - I've had it fail for me.

Yeah, it failed when I got stuck - the tippet came up empty. It could have been me tying it badly, of course, but how the hell do you screw THAT knot up for crying out loud??

There was another "knot" (tying ) thread (two weeks in which I wrote this response) not too long ago.

In it I wrote about what I have discovered that when one of my knot fails... it is a result of two things.

1.) I didn't use salvia to reduce the friction when tightening the knot, thus leaving it not as secure as I could have.

2.) As I am pulling the knot taught (salvia already ADDED) if I don't hold the tag end securely against the shaft of the hook, the knot will in most cases not hold.

I hold the tag end against the hook shaft till the knot is securly tightened, then and only then do I release the tag end and clip off the excess.

I have lost too many fish over the years and when I retrieve my tippet to observe the "piggy tail" reminder that my knot slipped off releasing the fish was caused by not following two simple procedures.

That might be it - I stopped "greasing" my knots when I switched to fluoro. I should try it again with a little spit.

Floro is even more prone to heat weakness from friction. Salvia or chap stick is very important to floro. If the buildup of heat is to high the knot will be very weak.

looks to me like the davy knot about which i started a tread recently. i have been using it for my last few outings and the knot and it came only undone once (guess it was my fault...). but I only used it with Froghair Fluoro 6x so far. more testing to come, but so far so good. it's easier to tie especially if it's freezing cold. speaking of which we offiicially went below zero today, first time this year.

Thats a great knot. It's been tested on everything from small trout on small flies to steelhead. The only way it does not hold is if you tie it worng. It's a thrid the size of a clinch knot. It's especially effective for smaller flies since the knot itself is so small. My friend Davy came up with that knot when he was a kid!

Here is a quote from Davy that I pulled off of my board:

You guys, my knot was when l was a kid in the 50s the only way l could figure how to tie a hook to mono with, l have more or less used no other all my life.

I have used it for all species including big game fish and deep water ocean fish when fishing wrecks and stuff like that.
And for trout any x factor, as low as 12x.

It is almost a 100% strength knot

Have great confidence with this knot if you tie it right and snug it down it will not slip.

It is also a knot l use for other means other than hook eye connections.

I will explain more or that one later.

That looks like the old 'figure 8' knot. Was recently reading a few old books and that knot was mentioned, I think in the Notes & Letters of Theodore Gordon, as a simple to tie and strong knot. I haven't tried it, I use the 'Improved Clinch', but I'll try it this coming year.

The Davy Knot and Ed Koch's "The Knot" are indeed one and the same. I recently did some tests on it and found it comparable to other knots which I found easier to tie. Although it looks simple, I found it awkward to tie with limp 6-X. I'm kind of partial to knots like the 16/20 where the tag end is only inserted once. The one time insertion is especially easier and quicker for me in low light conditions and with numb fingers. Just my opinion of course; different strokes for different folks.

I will have to try that knot. I mostly use a palomar knot, but have been told it's a bad knot for floro. I have also been using that "frog hair" or 16/20 knot. I think they are one in the same. I will have to try this other knot though. Looks easy and painless.
