American Angler - Letort Hopper

I was just reading the recent American Angler magazine (Fall 2007) article entitled “Insurance-Policy Dry Flies” on some old patterns that have fallen out of favor in the past few years. One fly that caught my interest was Ed Shenk’s Letort Hooper pattern that the author claims drop in popularity due to the advent of foam flies that now fill the fly shop bins. I have tied foam hoppers, but only once fished a short time with it, mainly I fish a pattern that is a very close to Ed’s Letort Hopper pattern and that is his Letort Cricket pattern, which is my all time go to day time summer fly. I have heaved the hopper at the banks, but you fish with a fly that you have the most confidence in.

One of my favorite Carlisle, which is located just blocks to the heritage fly fishing location on the famed Letort Spring Creek and one of Ed Shenk’s local hang outs. So this morning I gave Herb a call to see how the sales (and thoughts) of the two patterns differ, but I just kept getting the answering machine.

Another popular pattern is Dave’s Hopper and a few others, but I was curious about what some of you fish with?
