what am I doing wrong?

Hi all, I've started to like nymph fishing in the last 2 month but on average I loose 70% of the fish before I actually can have a look at them. Am I doing something wrong or its normal? Can it be the rod? I use a loomis 8'6" presentation and maybe it's not the best for nymphing, sometimes It feel too soft when i set the hook.Do you have different rods for dry and nymph fishing? Any help its very much appreciate
