Just back from the Bahamas Flew in from the Bahamas yesterday. The fishing was fantastic to say the least. The Captain is someone I have fished with alot, that why I went.
The first day we fished out of Riding Rock marina which is on San Salvidor Island, population, including tourists, about 1000. Boated yellow fin and wahoo up to 80 lbs.
The second day we trolled our way to Rum Cay, total pop 50. Just wahoo, again up to 80 lbs. Spent the night there in a marina.
Third day we trolled our way back to San Sal and and got attacked by mahi up to 60 lbs. Got 2 on the fly and had to break another off due to being spooled. Got back to San Sal and boated more yellow fin, one well over 100 lbs. Saw something there that we don't see up here, skying tuna. A group of flying fish would launch (they really do fly, sometimes almost 100 yds.) and when they would touch down the tunas would launch about 5 ft. in the air, unreal is the only way to describe it. You really need to see 100 lb. tuna airborne, I'll never forget it!
Forth day we trolled and the fishing slowed, only one tuna and one wahoo, both around 40 lbs. We stopped and deep dropped for awhile and hooked up, more times than not the sharks would put an end to it.
The fishing there is much different there than here. Shallow water of about 40 ft. drops to over 1500 ft. The drop is almost vertical. You need to fish an incoming tide. The tide hits the wall and rises vertically, bringing the bait with it. You troll pattern along the drop. When the tide gets moving you hook alot of fish.
The Capt. would radio ahead on the way back and Beverly would meet us at the dock and take our catch to the restaurant and cook it for us. We would give her a full 1 gal. bag of assorted fish and what we needed for dinner, and we would get $40 off the bill. Bribery and bartering get you what you need! Then it would be off to the Riding Rock bar for a generous portion of Kahlic's and then drunken golfcart races back to the boat. A bunch of 40+ year olds acting like teenagers, it was outstanding. When I get back to Jersey, I'll post some pics. I'm limited to what I can post. We had a writer from Florida Sportfishing mag. on the trip to do the story. He asked us not to post certain types of pics. He is a great guy, so I will do as he asked. |
