Not having received a response on my previous question, I would like to start a new thread on this topic.
I have fished the East Branch in the past, and agree it is important to the general fishing public in that it does decrease the fishing pressure on the West Branch, and, to some degree, the Main Stem.
That said, I have experienced a sharp decrease in the number of public access sites for this stream. The large parking lot ~ three miles north of Harvard has been closed. Last September, I drove the road on the west side of the river all the way to Colchester, and the two signs that had been posted by the DEC marking the access to the river along a narrow path had been removed. (by whom??...are they still missing??)
I have also heard that the town supervisor for the town of Colchester is not all that positive towards out of town fisherfolk.
That said, that leaves the old parking lot by the bridge where the closed fly shop still stands as the one access site for the EB. (that I know of)
I conclude that either I just don't know where the public access sites are, or the EB is turning into a private stream for the use of property owners only.
Compare the EB to the WB, where there are at least nine public sites from the dam to Balls Eddy, plus the added benefits that WB water has in cooling the Main Stem and maintaing a wild trout fishery (versus the stocking on the EB), and I believe we have valid reasons for a slight emphasis on the WB.
What does the fishing public have to say about this???
