Circa 1919 ---The old Ottawa chief sat in his reservation hut, smoking his ceremonial pipe, quietly eyeing the two US Government officials sent to interview him. "Chief Two Eagles", one official began. "you have observed the white man for many generations, you have seen his wars and his work, you have seen all his progress and all his problems." The old chief nodded in agreement. The official continued,"Considering recent events, in your opinion, where has the white man gone wrong?" The old Chief stared at the two men for over a minute, and then he calmly replied. " When white man found this land, Indians were running it. No taxes. No debt. Plenty of buffalo, plenty of beaver, plenty trout and salmon. Medicine man free. Indian brave hunted and fished all the time, while Indian squaw do all the work. " The Chief then smiled, and added quietly," White man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that ! ! ! "
