I was recently talking with fellow angler rford about Alaska and beads… specifically why they work so well. We got a little side traced and started discussing estaz flys and conversing not arguing over why they work as well as they do and what they represent without giving any further thought to this past productive fly.
Well last night as I read “Midge Magic” I came across a fly pattern that began to make me wonder more about the estaz fly. It was a fly called the diamond midge fly that is basically a bling bling midge pattern. By bling bling it shines like 50 cents ice. The fly is referd to as a diamond midge fly because certain midges etc release gases causing the midge to flash. What I began to wonder about the estaz fly is do salmon or steel head eggs have or relase any gasses and if so what can cause the relase of these gasses… is that why steel head flys like the estaz are so productive.
