Re: Big Spring Creek

MACFLY,

"I mean at peak production it was using something like 8000 gallons a minute." That may well have been the water usage but the hatchery had it's own deep wells or springs to provide water for the hatchery. Once the hatchery was closed so were the wells or springs so all that you have now is the upwelling of the springs to the right of the concrete flume and believe me it is pretty weak.

Below the Ditch the stream widens out in a couple of places - maybe up to 50' in some places and maybe 6" deep. No cover, no bugs, = no fish in those barren sections. I've fished it maybe half a dozen times in the last 24 years and don't think I ever saw a trout below the bridge just downstream from the Ditch.

The Letort is much deeper, there are many places where the water is above my waist and I'm 6' tall. Yes, there are some places that are just maybe 8' - 10' wide but even there there is depth and undercut banks. It is a very tough stream to fish but I have seen some fish to maybe 20" or 22" but if there are many of them I'd never know it. I've seen maybe four big fish over the course of half a dozen trips.

I've been told it has a pretty good Baetis emergence during many months of the year and it does have good Tricos. I don't know if it has any other mayflies. It is very lightly fished but again I'd not recommend it to anyone who lives more than two hours away unless you like very tough fishing and can tolerate seeing very few rises and may wind up the day getting blanked.
