Not Ranked : 0 Beaverkill Report 6/18/09 I was on my way home from work at 3:30 and started thinking about the Beaverkill. Not having been up there once this week and with the rain in the forecast for the next 3 days, I knew this would be my only chance to fish it before the water gets high and off color. I hurried home and loaded my gear in the car. Then newbie called and busted on me for going without him. lol
Everytime I drive Route 17 through the Catskills I am in awe of their beauty and this day was no different. It was overcast, but the green mountain peeks stood out against the greyish clouds and looked gorgeous. I pulled into the parking area at 5pm and started gearing up. Then I realized that all my fly boxes were on the dryer at home. $%&#! I looked at my vest and fortunately my fly dryer was there with 7 flys on it. 2 March Browns, a parachute sulphur, a comparadun sulpher, a blue quill, a parachute iso, and a iso spinner...great I have everything I need.
On the water at 5:15. Checked the water temp...61 degrees. Looked around saw one other fisherman (Bob) and that the river was up and moving (680 cfs). There were only a few tan caddis on the water. The waxwings and blackbirds were feeding on something up high above me but I couldn't tell what they were. Around 7pm I started seeing large and small sulphurs laying eggs with an occasional iso flying by. I started seeing rises, but with the water moving as fast as it was, I couldn't tell where the rise was unless I was staring right at it when it happened. Found a spot where a subsurface boulder was creating a nice eddy and parked myself downstream from it, thinking that would be a good spot for fish to hold in the current. Sure enough I saw a rise within a couple minutes. Made a cast above the boulder, my sulphur slid around in the eddy and splash, first fish on. Managed 2 more before there before dark. All decent brownies.
Sorry, no pics, my camera is still backpacking across Europe, presently in Naples.
All in all, a great evening on the BK.
