BK Report 5/12/09

Met my son in Roscoe, NY for a day of fishing on the Beaverkill. First trip of the year. Air temps were around 40 degrees when we arrived, so we started our morning off at the Roscoe Diner. If you're planning a trip up there soon, bring some warm clothing and those neos. Their mornings aren't like ours here in NJ yet. I think everyone else fishing up there had the same idea, as the diner was full of guys wearing fishing hats. It was very enjoyable getting caught up on my son's college experiences. One more year and he's done. Soon I will have money to spend again, hurray.

We started our day at Painters Bend. It was a beautiful day to be on the water and we had it all to ourselves.

The gear on my sons reel was acting up, probably from lack of use, so we went to the Beaverkill Angler to have it looked at. Those guys have a great little fly shop. Before we left, one of the guys gave me a hint by saying "fish mahogany". That was all I needed to hear. So we had a late lunch next door at Buffalo Zack's and headed back out to the pool recommended by Burtbords.

When we got there only one other guy was there.

The water temp was 52 degrees and there were bugs in the air. Not a great hatch yet but there were tan caddis, giant cahills, big brown drakes, and lots of tiny midges flying about. The trout were keying in on the big bugs, so I started with a #12 Blue Quill and within a few minutes it was gobbled up by a nice brownie. Just like I was told, as evening came a decent hatch was forming and the rises became more consistent.

My son walked into the best spot of the pool.

It was getting dark and my son just had to catch one more, so he could "one up me" as he put it, and that last cast paid off.

Here's a little fish porn for those of you who need it.

All in all, a great day on the BK. Definately in my top 10 best trips up there. Thanks Burt for your recommendation.
