Started at 6pm on friday and had slightly cold rainy weather with the air temp being about 55. Went to Carins and saw a pod of fish rising in the lower end of the pool to what looked to be small olives on the water ,but couldnt get them to take and switched to a rusty spinner. Took 4 nice 15-16 inch browns in the pool and waded down river a bit to a nice riffle. Ended the night with two nice fish nymphing one bow and one nice brown about 18 inches on a caddis pupa fished deep.
Now for the frustrating saturday. I woke up at 7 hoping to start the day off with a quick couple of fish nymphing behind my house but soon realized the water was too cold for the fish to be moving much. Had 0 hits til 10 when I decided to head downriver to the gamelands. Had 0 cars in the parking lot and saw lots of olives on the river at around 10:30. I start thinking its going to be a great day there ,but I forgot to account for the wind that picked up at around noon and the fact that the delaware just doesnt make sense sometimes. From noon to 4 the water was covered by a variety of spent caddis,olives, and a few hendriksons but the fish never really got going. A rise here a rise there was how it went and the wind just really frustrated us. The day was not over however and my dad and I rushed to the no kill where we were greeted with small dimples picking up the leftovers on the far bank til dark. I decided to go with a rusty spinner/brassie dropper and my dad went with a hendrikson emerger. Both worked great as I turned around a bad day with 7 fish in 2 hours the largest being a thick 21inch brown and my dad with his trusty 2-3 fish that hes good for if the fish are willing(which they were).
As for sunday, same thing happened on the beaverkill. Saw a decent amount of march browns with no wind blowing and a nice cloudy 65 degree day. Saw 3 rises and only caught 1 fish on a nymph. Headed home with the feeling that the trip was a success when looking at the amount of fish caught ,but feeling that the overfall fishing was so so due to the fact that very few pools had consistent action and because the fish were not responding to the bugs that were on the water. Hopefully next week will bring more march browns and some big heads to the surface  |
