I was suppose to go to the Salmon River this Tue-Wed but decided not to take the trip due to weather in the forecast. With the cold front coming through I thought it would be better to stick in the general area. Instead of fishing the salmon I decided to take a trip to the Beaver Kill a river I have not fished that much.
Well I knew it was going to be windy and cold but I dont think I was mentally prepared for how windy it was actually going to be. I figured I would nymph on the drive up since the temps had dropped quite a bit the night before.
When I arrived at the river it was windy and cold however the Hendricksons were coming off. I could tell by the birds working so I ran down excitedly to finds rising fish. Which rose off an on the whole time I was there. It was tough fishing between the wind and the multiple insects coming off at some point the trout switched from Hendricksons to what I originally thought were paraleps but now believe were baetis.
Between my cursing and the wind almost blowing me over I managed three fish to hand and lost two along with missing a few more all on top. I also believe I saw March Browns about three in total.. I know its early but the bug I saw was large and had molted wings. Had it not been so cold and windy it could have been a great day. I fished with one spot all to my self which was very nice and didnt see another angler till the ride back.
