Hey,
thought I'd share my trip yesterday to the Mettawee. Bottom line I caught the same tree twice and didn't see any fish. I did have some fun however and learned a few things about the river. Level was about 630cfs. Seemed high but plenty of areas fishable. I parked at the fisherman's lot off 23a between Granville and middle granville. Walked about a half mile upstream to a nice ledge drop with a couple of downstream eddys. Water did not seem as cold as I expected. I must confess I don't own a stream thermometer but my hand says it was above 45deg. I tried some of my favorite midge nymphs and as noted hooked a good size tree that was too high up to bring the flys to hand. Broke off and found that the knot(Davey Wooton) failed on the first fly resulting in a two fly donation. Hooked the same tree about ten min. later but was able to retrieve that fly. I saw some midges hatching, but the only thing taking them was a bat, and I could get it interested in any of my drys. The river was clear , but the banks were an abomination of garbage, including a diaper part way up the bush by the drop I fished. I have so much confidence in my technique that I assume there are no fish in that drop(? toxic waste dump the day before). However apparently a 22in ? brown was displayed in the local paper the day before my arrival. Could have been the last trout in the river. There was plenty of fishable water that I passed up. I may go back to scout out some more since it is about a half hour from my house. Toodes,Frogge. |
