Ideal tackle for Catskill areas???

Hello. I'm planning to go to the Catskill areas in NYS. I'm thinking of using a 9-foot rod with a 6-weight line. However, it might be a little too heavy for streams in that area. Would you recommend lighter tackles such as a 6-foot rod with a 3-weight line?
