I hit the West Branch on Saturday for a few hours. I tried the no-kill in Deposit. I had three takes but I could not convert them to catches(but unfortunately that is NOT unusual). The bright spot of the day, was the amount of insects I saw on the water. I was on the water at 5:00 PM, and I shocked at the number of bugs on the water. They were everywhere. There were fish rising in every direction (MANY smaller fish, just a few larger fish that I could tell). There were MATS of dead and dying bugs at the slow edges of the river. It was nice to see, that less than a year after the river's scouring due to the flooding, the numbers of some bugs have not been affected negatively.
At first, there were so many insects on the water, my fly was "lost" among them. As their numbers waned, I began to get the takes. The flies continued to come off sporadically (as the rises were sporadic also) until I left somewhere around 8:00.
Below are some bugs I found. Anyone want to attempt an ID?
