Have your cake and eat it too

Okay, this is a post that will likely go unanswered, but who knows…maybe you have done this too.

I have a girlfriend, a lovely woman, who isn’t the least bit interested in fishing. She works for a university and has taken a few weeks off and plans to take a vacation during August.

I do not work for a university and have scarce vacation time. This year, I feel a little flush and have started thinking about a summer vacation. Naturally, I want to go out west, rent a small place and fish and hike and relax. She isn’t so interested. She would like to go to Europe. Now, I’d like to go to Europe too but I don’t have the endless amount of paid vacation time that she enjoys.

I can go by myself to Montana or Idaho, see a friend in New Mexico and have a good time. I think my girlfriend wouldn’t be so pleased to have to take her vacation alone.

But, I believe that there is always room for compromise. My thought is that Europe must have some killer rivers and I just don’t know any of them. There must be a way to find a lovely river, with willing fish, mountain scenery outside of the U.S. w/o having to fly all the way to South America or (worse) New Zealand. Why don’t I have my cake and eat it too?

So my question to the group is this. Who knows of places (worthwhile places) to fish in the Alps? I’ve never been there and if I must go, and I can spend a day or two on the river, then that’d be an unforgettable vacation.
