Bonefish 2, FFDuck 0 - Bahamian Fly Fishing Part 2

Hello All,

Sorry for the delay in posting about my Andros South Bone Fishing Trip (most of you don’t care…but I like to think that I am important…to someone in this world)….and from the score you can see that the Bonefish pitched a NO-HITTER.

For those who don’t know I took a quick 4 day trip with my wife to Nassau, Bahamas (business/pleasure for her…pure pleasure for me). Since, I was going to be in the Bahamas…How could I not take a shot at some bonefish on a fly? First, I let me mentioned that I have never flied fished for anything (ok I did took a shot some trout at the Pequest Trout Hatchery stocked fishing pond last year. I still got skunked).

The Bahamas, is a beautiful place…it brought back beautiful memories of my youth that I can’t share with my wife. I used to live in the DR for almost two years. I only had a opportunity to fish for two days. Here was the breakdown of my two days:

Wake-up Call - 4:45am
Cab to Airport - 5:45am
Flight from Nassau to Andros - 7am (first flight out of the day)
Arrive at 7:20am and shuttled to Andros South
On the water @ 8:30am
Fished until 1:30 to 1:45pm
Back at the Airport by 2:30pm
Flight from Andros to Nassau – 3:30pm (last flight out of the day)
Arrive at 3:50 and cab to Atlantis Paradise Island
Than I had to do the Husband and Wife thing (black tie events, dinners, three card poker, etc...) I got to bed @ 1am or 2am. I will do anything to go fishing.

As you can see I was on a very tight schedule. So, I had to make a choice to either fish longer, with shorter runs or fish shorter, with longer runs...which had more productive fish. I chose to fish longer…so I had a guide all to my self and we hit two inlets that crossed the entire island called Little Creek and Deep Creek. We also decided to wade both days. Man, what a work out!!! It wasn’t long before he spotted the first fish, but it was to far off for me to hit. So we tracked it and tracked it before we lost it in cloud cover. Both days were beautiful, clear skies with scattered clouds. But, we also had some wind somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 – 20 mph with gust up to 25 mph+. Which for some of you is nothing but, for me, I might as well be fishing in a wind storm.

Now, my first chance turned out to be my best chance at a bone. I was so amped, that everything that Drew (@ Tight Lines) showed me went right out the window. My first cast was too far to the left and the second splashed too hard and spooked the fish. At that very moment I wished that I would have practiced more at home. (See I only purchased my very first set-up this February…and ever broke it out before my trip…missed opportunities). And after that everything went downhill…We tracked and hunted, we cast and cast, but with the wind, clouds and spooky fish. We couldn’t buy a bit, but man did I have a great time. By, day two I was casting better, but still want was worth a damn. I could go on and on about each and every cast (believe me it burned into my head), but I just wanted to share a little we you all.

I will definitely be going back…soon. Most people go to Andros South for a week at a time. I actually saw one group leaving (Allan Johnson group) and another group coming. Man, they definitely looked liked they had a great time. Everyone thought that I was crazy or something for traveling as much as I did, to fish as little as I did. But, hell fishing is fishing. Everyone at the lodge was great…they made everything effortless once I got to the island. The lodge was small, but extremely well-organized. I would like to thank everyone at Deneki Outdoors (Andros South) and to Andrew and John at Tight Lines for helping me set everything up.

Until next time…

Richard
