Friday, 6/11/04 - Fished the Musky

Fished the Musky yesterday with a good friend. We fished a stocked section that holdovers fish. This is in a nice secluded tree lined spot, away from any road or bridge that gets limited pressure. It was cloudy most of the day and checked the water temps and the were between 63 and 67 F. There were really no hatches soming off and only saw an ocassion rise. However, I could at times see some fish working the bottom.

I was flyfishing with a olive wooly buggers tied with some crystal flash that I made up the night before friend was fishing bait (I know, I know but I am working on coverting him)

We fished from 10-6 and covered over 1/2 mile of stream. We had a good day catching 32 trout ranging in size from 8 - 14 inches (I had 14) and a few smallmouth. We also missed at least a dozen other fish, one of which was good size a took my friend under log. We were able to relase all but 3 of the trout and all swam off unharmed.

The vast majority of the fish were rainbows but we also caught about 1/2 dozen brookies but only 3 browns. The rainbows were really were realy nice looking, fat and colorful. They a bronze green backs and with bright rosy red gill plates and lateral stripes.

The fish were spread out but you could tell they were learning about straem life because they were no longer just sitting in in the open fish market fare but had begun to use stream cover and feeding lanes. However there was one remote spot we hit, a sharp bend after a long flat section of river that started as long run emptying into a deep pool, there we caught 8-9 fish. Several of the fish that I caught in feeding lanes had been chowing down on the stream insects because you could see them stuffed down their throats.
