tying variations

I've been looking at some traditional dry fly recipes and have a few questions regarding variations that I've noticed.

In some recipes the woodduck fiber wings are split and in others they are not. Can anyone tell me more about what either of these is supposed to achieve?

I noticed in some recipes that hackle is tied in behind the wings and wrapped forward, and at other times it is tied in before the wings and wrapped backwards. Is this just preference?
