Sandy Hook

I am 99.9% of the time a flyfisherman, but My dad and brother are visiting from PA and they want to do some striper fishing at Sandy Hook. I hate to say it but we will be chucking bait. I assume clams and bunker. I do not know a whole lot about surf fishing as I am just starting to get into it. I enjoy throwing out a steak and waiting for the unknown to bite all while leisurley sipping on can of suds. I do not want to disappoint them so can anyone give me some good advice on surf fishing at Sandy Hook in order increase our chances of catching a striper? Last time I was there in the summer and as soon as I casted out my bunker something took off with with my bait for a good 3 minutes before the hook came out. Any ideas what that could have been?
