Joan Wulff Receives Top Conservation Award

ST. ANDREWS, NEW BRUNSWICK, Jun. 3 -/E-Wire/-- Joan Wulff of Lew Beach, NY has received the Lee Wulff Conservation Award, the top award bestowed on an individual from the Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF), an international organization that promotes the conservation and wise management of wild Atlantic salmon.

Bill Taylor, ASF President, commented, “This year’s Lee Wulff Conservation Award is being presented to Joan Wulff for all she has done to advance the sport of salmon angling, while working tirelessly to ensure conservation of this valuable species. For many years Joan worked along side her husband and, after his passing, she continued the work he had begun, especially promoting live release angling, which saves thousands of salmon each year.”

Mrs. Wulff, who has been an avid angler with amazing casting skills for more than 70 years, is a member of the Atlantic Salmon Federation’s Board of Directors and has generously supported ASF’s conservation mission over the past several decades. She also operates a fly fishing school and has written several books and magazine articles on the art of fly fishing. Joan has won many championships and is the recipient of numerous angling and conservation awards.

ASF has presented the Lee Wulff Conservation Award for wild Atlantic salmon conservation annually since 1987 for outstanding, long-term contributions to conserve threatened wild Atlantic salmon. Lee Wulff, a world-renown salmon angler, artist, author, and filmmaker, dedicated 60 years of his life to conserving wild Atlantic salmon.

Mr. Wulff advocated live release angling to conserve salmon and began teaching the techniques in 1933. He convinced Newfoundland’s government to establish a daily catch limit for salmon in 1939 and he produced a film on Greenland’s commercial fishery, highlighting the need to control Atlantic salmon exploitation, in the 1960s. A long-time ASF Director and Vice President, Lee Wulff continued his salmon conservation efforts up until his death in 1991.

The Atlantic Salmon Federation (ASF) is an international, non-profit organization that promotes the conservation and wise management of wild Atlantic salmon and their environment. ASF has a network of seven regional councils (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Maine and Western New England) which have a membership of more than 126 river associations and 40,000 volunteers. The regional councils cover the freshwater range of the Atlantic salmon in Canada and the United States.
