i'm looking for a little advice

With the help of this board and it's members i have learned so much, i think what's best about this board is questions about fly fishing are common and that helps keep the information circulating,..
I live in upstate new york, columbia county we have some nice streams, and as usual i went out today, each year i say i have more knowledge then last year and i have learned more , but again, today it did not seem to help. I used a variety of nymphs and streamers and i went to spots i usually have luck once the weather gets warmer , but had no luck, Could any one give advice of what fly to use, i tried nymphs and attempt to weight them so i could get them down as much as possible, thinking most hold over trout , would be in deeper water . My question is my thinking right or should i stay with places that are not as deep , are trout still feeding on the out skirt of faster moving water this early . The weather was warmer today and it was a pleasure to see some insects around the water ,.. thank's to any one who can give some info,
